ELES THE BOOTUR WHO RODE THE HORSE NAMED
BLACK BEAR
(Olonkho)
Part I
At the beginning of the utmost ancient days, in the deep of old times,
in the beautiful valley of Tuymaariitta, in a cabin vast as a hillock, a son
of the Middle World, a brave man Eles the Bootur who had a reddish
black stallion, was sitting in his great grief, meditating on a flaming fire.
A few days ago he had buried his beloved father and mother. He was a
noble man and an only son of his father named Dorguya Baai Toyon
and mother named Nirgiyc Baai Khotun. Together with his three sisters
Eles the Bootur was raised in a rich and plentiful family and was at the
beginning of his fame and glory. He was a strong warrior and had a
might and a will to punish the ones who came to fight from the Upper
World and to pull out the gall bladder from the ones who came to fight
from the Lower World.
His elder sister’s name was Aitaliin Kuo whose hairs were eight sajenes
long. His second sister was Ayii Uyantai, well-known for her
compassionate mind. And his younger sister’s name was Kiis Chereliin.
One chilly morning Eles the Bootur got up and looking up to the
heavens began his song maybe with a warning, maybe with an obloqu:
“Why do I not have the honor of greeting anybody from the Upper
World?”. After three days, in the fall of a dark night facing to the North,
the abode of tribe of Arsan Duolai', he said cursing: “Why nobody from
the Lower World calls my name?”. This time, as nothing happened for
three days, at the sunrise he faced the West and spoke harshly and
severely to the people of Ayii‘ tribe, who lived under the Western Edge
of the Sky.
The three sisters became worried with their brother’s shameful and
disgracing behavior. They asked with tears on their eyes if he wouldn’t
do wrong. Eles the Bootur didn’t understand their request and cared the
words of his sisters for nothing and continued to spend the way of life as
he did before.
