16 PETR OGOTOEV
His trousers, mittens and cap were
Of different parts of the same foal,
His fan was of the foal’s tail,
His belt was of a rose-willow,
Having a very little bow,
A sword as large as a knife,
A spare made of a young larch.
His face was like a shin,
His forehead was like a knee,
Bow-legged, very short,
With sharp eyes, loud voice,
A messenger boy was he,
On his thin moulted foal
Was crawling along a lake
Hunting a duck.
When he saw our hero
Rushed to the three yurtas
Screaming ready to burst out
Riding like a woodpecker
Started to sing out:
Messenger Boy
“Bless you! Bless you!
Urui-aikhal!
I have news to tell you,
Listen to me, listen to me!
The strongest hero,
The Sun relative is
Coming up to be a son-in-law.
You, swift Baraanchai,
Didn’t you foresee and hear?
Didn’t you dream about it?
You’re sitting here, thick-skinned!
Stand up as quick as possible,
Meet your son-in-law,
Welcome him!
Be ready to celebrate a wedding
As quick as possible!”
His loud voice came across the lake.
