ELES BOOTUR 8 9

The hero of the Middle World
                                               Having gone through
                                               Troubles and misfortunes
                                               Stumbled over the lair
                                               To the terrible Low World
                                               From where nobody came back
                                               Eles Bootur, the great
                                               Addressing his horse said:
“If I manage to come back
                                               Safe and sound,
As soon as I call you
Be near me, even if you
                                               Are far from here,” —
And he set his horse free.
                                               Looking into the passage
                                               Gaping at it he saw:
                                               Bushes here and there
                                               Winding roads full of
                                               Evils and turmoils.
                                               Eles Bootur the Great
                                               Couldn’t move backwards
                                               And he continued his way
                                               To a fathomless pit
                                               Of evil spirits.
On his way to it looking back
                                               He saw the last gleam
Of his land as a sun ray
                                               Getting to a dim gorge
He made out with a vigilant eye
                                               A passage with trees
                                               Looking like sharp stakes.
A lot of men trying to jump over
                                               Were picked becoming victims
                                               Of birds and animals,
                                               Only their skeletons
                                               Were mocking at now.
                                               Having seen it,
                                               Eles Bootur shuddered,
                                               His hair stood on end,
                                               He stepped back.
