16 PETR OGOTOEV
This seldom famous
Green flat field
Full of special grass
For a race horse,
Full of divine forage
For a bold horse,
Full of harmful grass
For a pacer,
Full of fresh sprouts
For a trotter,
Mountain grass grows to cover
Daring horse’s legs,
It has mirror-like water
And mare’s tail3
Sprouts cover its surface,
A bittern doesn’t linger on,
A cuckoo doesn’t disappear,
A woodcock returns again and again,
A snipe is always in its woods.
It hasn’t any winter
It’s always summer here,
Good luck is always here,
Could you imagine,
Could you think of
Such a wonderful land?
If you look round
Its woods and plants,
You will see
Aspen leaves
Trembling without a wind,
Wearing the best dresses,
Walking haughtily,
Talking over loudly,
Birches grow side by side.
Black-shadowed firs
Never turning yellow
Like important persons
Putting on their fur coats,
Thinking over seriously,
Stand side by side.
